News of Sister Geri Bangerter, December 2013

A lovely photo of Sister Bangerter from her Facebook page, December 2013.  Yes, she has a FB page!

From Lee Ann.

Our Mom had a fall Sunday evening and broke her left hip.  She had a successful surgery yesterday and is resting.  Glenda's son in law did the surgery, Gordon Stock.  She will be in the American Fork hospital for a couple more days, and then moved to a rehab center in American Fork, either Thursday or Friday.  It remains to be seen how long she will be at the rehab center, it could be weeks or a couple of months.  Mom is positive and very aware and alert of her medical condition and will do all she can do to recover.  It is advised by the doctors not to have too many visitors (at this point)....the less stimulation she gets, the better she can heal.  In other words, she needs to rest....The family plans to be with Mom around the clock, taking turns with shifts.

Please include her in your thoughts and prayers.  She would welcome cards!  If you're interested to visit her later, contact Cory or Julie or other children first about her condition and availability....Mom loves all her missionaries and we are so grateful to all of you for the wonderful lives you live and for your love and friendships.

Bangerter Books Available at BYU Bookstore

For those of you who live more distant from Sister Bangerter this may be of interest to you.

Both Sister Bangerter's and Elder Bangerter's autobiographies are available online at BYU Bookstore. Perhaps more convenient for you.

Earlier in the year I very much enjoyed reading, "Welcome the Task: The Biography of Geraldine Hamblin Bangerter".

Welcome the Task: The Biography of Geraldine Hamblin Bangerter

I just finished reading "These Things I Know:  The Autobiography of William Grant Bangerter"
These Things I Know: The Autobiography of William Grant Bangerter (Hard Cover Book) by William Grant Bangerter

There is much more in his book about him and the Church in Brazil than I knew previously.   A delightful read and reference.  Many of you will find yourselves in the index.  You might also rate it on goodreads.com

They are both delightful and very interesting; filling in the spaces of my memories.

These Things I Know: the Autobiography of William Grant Bangerter

Now available.

As the description states, it is the full story in his words.  For those of us who served under his mission presidency his book shares with us the rest of his life, farming, WWII flight instructor in the early days of the Air Corps, marriage to Mildred and the sadness of her passing, home construction, then Geri bringing much to the Bangerter family and his subsequent LDS service in Brazil and throughout the world.  It is a personal history of a man who influenced our lives and served in many pioneering ways in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

These Things I Know: the Autobiography of William Grant Bangerter

by
William Grant Bangerter

The full story of Wm. Grant Bangerter is one of epic changes, nostalgic seasons, and golden eras. His life spanned many monumental, global changes: from the pre-penicillin era plagues of influenza to modern AIDS; from the economic collapse of 1929 and the Great Depression to prosperity of the latter 20th century; through world wars and conflicts, including "The Great War" (World War I), World War II (in which he was an active participant), Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars and others. Each of these events and changes shaped and molded the world and enabled his character and attitudes to be a tower of strength for his friends, family and followers. Nostalgia for days long past, tempered by time from the harsh realities of day-to-day existence, surge up as sweet memories to soften those difficult days. The golden eras are often seen by succeeding generations as glorious and exciting, filled with adventures and tests, all leading to a crown of respect and honor for one so deserving.Hardcover, 567 pages

April 2013 Bangerter Group Reunion in Alpine

From Kim Russell, therussells.net/brazil
Queridos irmãos e irmãs:

Once again the Bangerter group is meeting together during this April's General Conference weekend.

We will meet on Thursday, April 4th, at the Alpine Stake Center, 98 East Canyon Crest Rd, in Alpine, UT, just a few hundred yards north of the Bangerter home.  Festivities will begin at 6 p.m.

It will be a great time to visit and catch up with each other.  Some will be presenting thoughts on their recent activities in or with Brazil.  There will be light snacks including Guaraná Antartica ...bem gelada!

Sister Bangerter will have copies of her recently published life story for sale ($15) and personal autographing. The book can also be sent to you by mail for $20.  If you can't come this April and would like to purchase the book on your own please contact [Kim Russell,  kim@therussells.net for Bangerter family sources].

For your information, President Bangerter's autobiography will be published this summer.  Check our website for details as they become available.  This is one book that we will all be anxiously awaiting.

Hope to see you all at the reunion.

Kim Russell

PS:  For those of you who will not be able to attend, I invite you to send me your comments with updates and thoughts about yourselves and your involvement with Brazil since your mission, or simply anything you would like to say to the group.  I will read these to those in attendance at the reunion and then pass them on to Sister Bangerter to keep.  My e-mail is .. kim@therussells.net

PPS:  I'm attaching a list of fellow missionaries that we have lost contact with mainly because of bad or incorrect e-mail addresses.  Would you mind looking over the list and filling in any addresses (or phone numbers) that you might know and sending me whatever you have?  That would be greatly appreciated as we don't want to lose anyone from our group.  If any of them have deceased, please so indicate.  (A list of deceased missionaries and spouses is being generated and will appear soon on our web site at ... therussells.net/brazil .)

"We saw pallets of pages from Mom's book.  It will be about 300 or so pages.  Sometime next week, Mom will get her books and take them home.  She ordered 1500 copies , , , $15.00 a copy....  We're all excited for Mom!  Heidi, Julie's youngest daughter, worked with Mom for 10 years, getting information, writting down her history, organizing the book, etc., a huge job!"

Season of Celebrating -- Geri Bangerter's 89th

Dear Beloved Brazilian Missionaries,

You are invited to join the Bangerter family in a celebration of
Geraldine Hamblin Bangerter’s 89th birthday. We are grateful for her
health and strength at this time. We have planned a season of
celebrating rather than a single day. She would love to see any of you
who are able to visit and would also be happy with a phone call.
Mother is still bright in her spirit and mind although she often uses
a walker to get around. She has made a remarkable recovery from her
stroke nearly two years ago. To commemorate good doctor reports she
went to Disneyland with Duella and her family after Christmas and had
a wonderful time riding around on Dad's motorized wheelchair.

Celebration season: Sunday February 24th  through Sunday March 3rd.
Open House times:
   Sunday, Feb. 24    2-8 PM
   Monday, Feb. 25   12-8 PM
   Sunday, March 3    2-8 PM

If you would like to come at another time during the week, call Geri
at 801.756.4236. or 801.897.0554 (cell)

Location:  Bangerter Farm, 542 S. Alpine Hwy., Alpine, UT 84004

For your information:

Geraldine’s recently printed biography, titled Welcome the Task, will
be available for purchase for $15.00 per copy for anyone who drops by
the house.   She would love to sign your copy.  She’s very excited
about this warm and charming full-color, beautifully designed 320 page
memoir.  Her granddaughter Heidi Shin has worked with her for over a
decade to transcribe interviews, search through journals and letters,
take photos and assemble artifacts. You will especially appreciate the
in-depth chapter about her time in Brazil. If you are not able to
visit for her birthday, but would like to purchase the book for
yourself and your family members, call Julie Beck, 801.518.9994, Heidi
Beck Shin 801.318.2043, or Cory Bangerter  801.885.3628.  Or, email:

Much love to you,
Julie B. Beck
